Pontypridd Town 0 Afan Lido 3
Welsh League Division One – 2nd February, 2008

For the second week running, Ponty could have been leading at half time after a good first half display but failed to reproduce their form after the interval and slumped to another home defeat.
The first effort on goal came after eight minutes when Rasul Abdul got clear on the left for Ponty and put over a perfect cross for Cyron Williams only for his free header to go inches wide. Williams had been pushed up front from his usual defensive position and shot wide direct from a free kick a minute later. On the quarter hour mark a Ponty corner was cleared and a lightning break upfield by the visitors ended with prolific striker Ian Jones shooting just wide.
Seven minutes later, the Abdul – Williams combination created another opening but Williams headed straight at Cosker this time. Lido were conceding a number of free kicks near their area and showed some defensive uncertainty which the home side were unable to capitalize on. However, the visitors went close after twenty five minutes when Jones bent a free kick around the wall only for Chris Golton to make an excellent full length save. Shortly afterwards, Lido’s Karl Lewis cut in and shot only for Golton to make another good save. The Dragons were now being pushed back and just after the half hour mark, Waters weaved past player after player but chipped just wide when faced with the advancing Golton.
Ten minutes before the break Ponty looked set to take the lead when a well struck Jacob Daly free kick squeezed under Leon Cosker’s body but the Lido keeper managed to retrieve his error inches before the ball could cross the line.
Home hopes were high of getting something from the game at the interval but the Ponty defence went to sleep eight minutes after the break when a Lido throw went to a completely unmarked Waters in the box and he hammered home an unstoppable shot. The visitors then had a goal disallowed and were starting to get a stranglehold on the game, partly as a result of the introduction of sub Kieran Howells who was causing a number of problems. A second goal came after sixty minutes and Howells started the move when he released fellow sub Corey Thomas with a run on goal. Thomas’s shot was saved by Golton but was too hot to hold and Jones had the simple task of scoring into an empty net.
The situation almost got worse for Ponty shortly afterwards when Stephen Davies let fly with a left foot shot on the run which cannoned off the post and away to safety. Play then went down the other end and new signing Luke Hooper took a corner which was headed over the top by Williams. Recent acquisition Mark Coles then saved the Dragons with a superb last ditch tackle on a Lido attacker who looked to have got clean through.
After seventy nine minutes, a Davies corner was punched away by Golton but the ball fell to Waters twenty five yards out and he took the ball on before scoring with a fierce left foot shot.
The scoreline was harsh after a competitive first forty five minutes but Ponty need to start putting a complete performance together, starting with a trip to Porthcawl this weekend to play big spending Bridgend Town.
