Welsh League Division One – 29th March, 2008

After heavy rain during the match, conditions were farcical by the end of the afternoon but the home side showed much greater know how and ability to adapt to them as the game wore on.
The visitors had the first shot on target after five minutes when a Mike Selio effort was safely held by keeper John Bailey after a neat move. However, a minute later Chris Golton had to show all his agility at the other end to tip over a Jamie Jenkins shot from the edge of the area which was heading for the top corner. However, three minutes later a crossfield ball found Mark Morris completely clear on the left hand side and he made ground before slipping a right foot shot past Golton. The home side now had the bit between their teeth and had a goal disallowed before Chris Watkins got to the byline after seventeen minutes and pulled the ball back for Daniel Clouth to score with a good shot from the edge of the box.
Ponty then looked dangerous when Jacob Daly got clear but was forced wide and had his shot deflected for a corner which Cyron Williams headed wide when well placed. Some excellent work by Wayne Antoniazzi then ended with a shot from the edge of the box which Bailey was forced to keep out with his legs with Rasul Abdul putting the rebound wide with an overhead kick. Nevertheless, Croesy increased their lead five minutes before the break when Watkins scored from the penalty spot after a needless challenge on Morris by Williams.
Conditions deteriorated as a result of heavy rain during and after the interval but Ponty actually started the second half quite well with Bailey making a smart save early on from a Matthew Phillips free kick. However, with standing water now appearing in many parts of the pitch, Ponty were patently unable to cope and Morris grabbed his second of the game after sixty eight minutes when a shot squirmed under Golton before stopping in a puddle with the Croesy player quickest to react. Dan Jenkins then shot into the side netting before Jenkins grabbed a brace in two minutes with a headed goal from a corner and a shot from close range after the ball had again stuck in the mud. Clouth then grabbed his second of the game and Croesy’s seventh after more penalty area water sports to round off the scoring. The pitch was undoubtedly unplayable for most of the second half but the match was already lost by then and the referee, not surprisingly, allowed the game to run its course. There were actually some good individual performances from Antoniazzi, Phillips, and Williams and the remarkably consistent Tommy Saleh also maintained his ever present record throughout every game this season. Despite this, the team as a whole were outplayed by a Croesy side who wisely stayed away from the middle of the park as much as possible and played the conditions well.
Ponty now face a Tuesday night game at home to Welsh Cup semi finalists Newport YMCA before a home game on Saturday against Caldicot.
