Pontypridd Town 1 Maesteg Park Athletic 1
Welsh League Division One – April 9th, 2008
Ponty’s team of walking wounded shared the spoils with fellow strugglers Maesteg Park on Wednesday in a game which could easily have gone either way.
The visitors started off in a positive fashion and after only two minutes Lloyd Nessbert was presented with a chance which he skied over the bar after sloppiness in midfield by the Town. Four minutes later, Maesteg’s Daniel Nash and Robert Fowler were both denied in the space of seconds by two stunning close range saves from Chris Golton.
The home side’s first real attempt on goal came after ten minutes when a Jacob Daly (pictured below) shot was deflected behind for a fruitless corner but they were still having difficulties at the back and, just before the half hour mark, they went behind after some shocking defending. Firstly, a slip near half way gave Nash a clear run on goal but the danger looked to have been averted when Golton again did superbly to block his shot. With three defenders now covering, it looked as if the danger had been averted but Nash was given time and space to collect the ball and move into a shooting position before firing past a static defence for the lead.
An equaliser almost came about three minutes before the break when Daly’s quick feet got him past the defence but Park keeper Chris Barlow managed to get a touch to his shot to deflect it behind.
Ponty had finished the first half positively and began in the same vein after the break with Chris Ridgeon getting forward regularly and setting up David Avery for a snap shot just before the hour which was safely held by Barlow. A deserved equalizer arrived After sixty eight minutes when a penalty was awarded after a hand ball by a Park defender. Captain Matthew Phillips stepped up to score with a beautifully taken penalty which was just reward for his performance despite carrying a nasty leg wound sustained at Croesyceiliog two weeks previously. Avery then went close with a long range effort before Daly looked as if he had put Ponty in front with fifteen minutes to go when he wriggled through and hammered a left foot shot past Barlow only to see it come back off the post and away to safety. Nevertheless, the visitors could well have got a winner of their own with four minutes to play when Nash was put clean through only for Golton to make a stunning save at his feet.
A share of the spoils probably ended Ponty’s survival hopes, particularly with an away game against title chasing Dinas Powys away this weekend and half the team having gone into this game carrying injuries.
